Worship and Wudu

Worship and Wudu

One of the pillars of Islam is that Muslims pray five times a day. Before those prayers, they are expected to perform a purification ritual called Wudu.

Wudu is the Islamic procedure for cleansing parts of the body. It consists of washing the ears, face, hands, arms (up to the elbows), then wiping the head and finally washing the feet with water.

Many larger mosques have washrooms set aside for this purpose, with a large central fountain circled by small benches; wudu may also be performed in a pool or fountain outside. In both cases, the facilities are usually located in the courtyard, and men and women carry out wudu separately.

Wudu is governed by fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), which specifies rules concerning hygiene and defines the rituals that constitute it.
